An arm pushed towards a sleeve before you have asked is a small piece of cooperation, and it tends to show up around now. Dressing turns from something done to your toddler into something done with them.
Shapes become recognisable, objects get compared for size, and problems that would have brought tears a while ago get worked at instead. There is visibly more thinking going on in ordinary moments.
What is new this month
Recognising a shape means seeing past size, colour and orientation to the form underneath. A triangle stays a triangle upside down, which sounds obvious and is a genuine piece of abstraction. Shape sorters are the usual proving ground, and you will often see a piece checked against the hole by eye before it is tried.
Problem solving at this age looks like persistence. When a toy is stuck or out of reach, your toddler now pauses, considers, and tries something different instead of repeating the move that failed. That pause is worth protecting, and stepping in a few seconds later than feels comfortable gives them room to find the answer.
Helping with dressing and comparing objects both depend on prediction. Offering an arm means anticipating what comes next in a routine, while comparing two things means holding both in mind at once and judging one against the other. Bigger and smaller usually come before more and less.
