Because is the word to listen for this month. Once a child can join two ideas with it, their sentences stop being lists and start carrying reasons, and their questions become considerably harder to answer.
Dressing turns into a joint effort in both directions, with clothes coming off long before they reliably go on. Longer stories can now be followed without pictures to hold the thread.
What is new this month
Complex sentences change what your child can tell you. Joining clauses lets them explain, contradict and give reasons, which means proper disagreements become possible for the first time. The reasoning inside the sentence will often be wrong, and the structure is the achievement rather than the logic.
The rise in why is grammar catching up with curiosity. It is the first question word that asks about causes rather than things, and there is frequently no satisfying answer, so a short honest one does the job. Turning it back occasionally, and asking what they think, gets more out of the exchange than an explanation does.
Dressing splits neatly into two skills. Undressing needs strength and a pull in roughly the right direction, while dressing needs orientation, sequencing and fine finger work, which is why socks defeat a child who can remove an entire jumper. Leaving the last stage to them, such as pulling a sleeve down, ends the process on a success.
