Your 33-Month-Old: Play That Needs Somebody Else

Written against AAP, CDC and WHO guidance. How we write these guides

At a glance
- Other children become collaborators rather than scenery.
- Play gets planned aloud before anyone starts: you be the doctor.
- Numbers appear in ordinary talk: two more, one each, three sleeps.
- Stories gain detail about how things looked and felt.
- Arguments about the plan can take longer than the play itself.
Playing near other children turns into playing with them. The difference is negotiation, since a shared idea has to be proposed, adjusted, and then kept going by more than one person at a time.
Play also gets planned before it begins, numbers turn up in ordinary conversation, and stories acquire descriptive detail that nobody asked for.
What is new this month
Social play makes new demands. Your child has to hold their own idea while taking in somebody else's, then find a version both can live with, and the falling out along the way is part of the skill rather than evidence against it. Adults are usually most useful translating rather than adjudicating.
Planned play is imagination organised in advance. Assigning roles, agreeing what a cushion represents, and starting only once everyone knows the arrangement is a more sophisticated act than the play that follows it, which is why the setting up sometimes takes the whole session.
Numbers used in daily life mean quantity has become practical rather than recited. Asking for two more, or working out that there is one each, is number sense doing a real job. Elaborating a story runs on a similar surplus: once the plot is secure, there is capacity left over for describing how the dragon looked and what it thought about the weather.
Week by week, in the app
Our paediatric specialist wrote one thing to notice and one thing to try for every week of the first three years. Here is what this month covers. The app works out which week your child is in from their birth date and brings each one to you on the day.
- Week 140Increasing Social Interaction
- Week 141Setting Up Planned Play
- Week 142Using Numbers in Daily Life
- Week 143Elaborating on Stories
This week, for your baby
Growbaby works out which week your baby is in from their birth date and brings that week's activity to you on the day, so you are not looking up where you are. Plus adaptive soothing for the nights and Growy for the questions in between.
