The second birthday sits at the end of this month, and the changes leading up to it are more mental than physical. A crayon starts making deliberate marks, questions multiply, and stories get invented rather than borrowed.
Independent play appears as well, in short stretches, usually within sight of you. It is the first time your child chooses an activity and then sustains it without needing you inside the game.
What is new this month
Drawing a line asks the arm to move in a controlled direction while the eyes track the result, which is a different task from the whole-arm sweep of earlier scribbling. The line is the start of representation: a mark made on purpose, with an intention behind it. Naming a drawing after it is finished rather than before is normal and does not make it less real.
The surge in questions is not only about information. Asking is now a way to open a conversation, to check that you are still there, and to work out how things fit together. Answers can be short, and saying that you do not know is a perfectly good one.
Invented stories and solo play draw on the same new ability: holding an imagined situation in mind without an object to prompt it. A child who can sustain their own scenario no longer needs a second person to keep it running, which is why both appear together. Expect the stretches to be short and to end abruptly.
