The third year opens with more words in a row. Two-word requests stretch to three, and the extra word usually carries the detail that was missing before, so wanting milk becomes wanting more milk now.
Counting attaches itself to objects for the first time, colour names settle onto colours, and both feet finally leave the floor together. Your child sounds and moves noticeably older than a few months ago.
What is new this month
A third word changes what a sentence can do. Two words can name and request, while three can specify who, how many, or which one. The grammar stays loose and small words get dropped, which is expected while vocabulary is growing faster than the rules for arranging it.
Counting objects is a real advance on reciting numbers. It means touching or pointing at one thing per number word and stopping when the objects run out, and understanding that the last number stands for the whole set is a separate idea that takes longer to arrive. Things that stay still, such as stairs or grapes, are far easier to count than things that move.
Jumping and colour naming have little in common except that both suddenly work. A jump needs enough leg strength to lift the whole body and enough balance to land it, and once it arrives it gets done constantly and everywhere. Colour names attach unevenly, often with one word covering everything before the others separate out.
